Juryrigged > Works > RPGs > Tourney's > VPT - Round 1: articuno1 VS In Ferro Veritas

From: articuno1 | Posted: 4/1/2005 6:19:26 PM

Daniel Constantine Augustus strolled along the windy beach in the afternoon. He heard the waves gently breaking over protruding volcanic rocks. Small specks of islands dotted the surface of the sea as far as the eye could see. Palm trees waved as seabirds skittered underfoot. Nature had taken eons to form this idyllic scene. The ensuing battle would destroy it in a matter of minutes.

Daniel felt the wind under his long, black leather trenchcoat. It cooled his body, but it did not lift his jacket. The jacket was being held down by weights, metal weights, weights that Daniel could shape to his will nearly instantly. Daniel was a psychic, and, as he liked to add, a damn good one too. He could manipulate matter at the molecular level, heat it and cool it, propel it to unbelievable velocities. He could also use his powers to read the basic emotions of life forms. He could project copies of himself which he could use as scouts or decoys, and Daniel could release power in a burst of psionic energy.

Daniel straightened his black ballcap, setting down his blade. His sword was a new acquisition to his arsenal, one he had found when visiting the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It was a blade made of teal coral, and it was still alive. An aboriginal artifact, the Coral Blade had been given to Daniel after he proved himself to a tribal shaman. Strong as steel, the solid surface gleamed in a spray of sea water. This blade could paralyse foes with the still-living coral polyps with which it was constructed. Daniel brandished it and from the knees of his blue jeans launched into a series of high-flying acrobatics as he awaited his adversary.

Kalisto pushed himself softly off that decaying tree as he stepped forward. The elf was, in essence, an antique dating of five millennia at least, but looked to be a human-like figure in his late twenties. His body was that akin of a young elven man – he was strong, lissom, compact, and respectable. His face was that of a figure whose sufferings might very well have spanned many millennia. Framed by a mane of smooth silver hair, the elf's face was handsome, stern, and appeared to be as cold and unfeeling as the dead ground that he walked upon. Lines of care and grief had been chiselled into the face in the shape of a crimson scar upon the bridge of his nose, spreading like a hungry fire, and stopping under his eyes. The fires of anger and hatred that had once burned in the black pupils had died out with the eyeball, leaving behind a primal, feral and cold sphere of mercury. He was as dark as an ebony backdrop, cold as concrete of castle walls and floors, and as hard as the steel that had been tempered in the forge for use of armour and common weaponry.

The elf had, upon his upper-body, a tunic that was of a rich, but heavy silky fabric - it was of a magical nature that seemed to change colors as the figure moved with it. In some places the tunic would be as white as the newly-fallen snow, or over there it would be like the deepest ebony where it would be black as shadow. Elsewhere, the tunic would just be dabbled with the deep gray-green of the trees, shadows or whatever nature threw out. In towns, the shirt would blend in with the brickworks of the city, almost like a chameleon; the patterns would run like moonlight on water with every step the warrior took, changing constantly. The heavy shirt had with it a wide and deep hood that had been left flat on the elf's back, with the v-neck of the shirt tied closed with black leather strings through the silver eyelets just above his sternum, leaving only a similar material covering up the middle of his neck to be exposed. Not a single crease of his shirt had shifted, as he stood quietly on the colourless sand of the underworld where he'd fight.

The figure's thoughts went back to the companions he had bid a temporary farewell to, as he left to find inner-peace within himself. Before his eyes flashed the alabaster face of the man who changed the elf's life. With a chance meeting in the middle of a broken down ghetto, the two figures fought, staining the ground with each others blood and ichor. It happened all too fast, and Kalisto, almost near his death again, for the hundredth time, found himself among the wraith, and the Crimson Void. While still bearing the scar from the wound infected from Veranix, the elf bore only honour and respect for the wraith, as he later learned whose name was Dispeyr. The wound healed in time, and the rib cage that had been caved in, mended itself, but the white scar still stayed, showing through the skin-like armor the elf had worn ever since the act of his freedom, of when he fought his Gods and lost. Of course, that was all passed, and the elf triumphed at a later date.

Then the white-clad leader of the Crimson Void, Duelist Alevek, crossed his thoughts. The two had shared a mutual respect, as most of the Void did. Although the elf was newly chosen by the wraith, Duelist had shown no contempt for the elf. As hard to read as the man was, Kalisto sensed a sort of trust and friendship from the leader of the Void. It was something, the elf mused. The two really only connected at the tournament the elf had devised, as a premise to gain more members for the faltering Void. Showing a good sense of authority, and good speaking skills, Kalisto felt he made his mark on Duelist, but they had not shared enough time together, nor did they do battle. Battle, in Kalisto's mind, was where you learn the most out of a person. Whether by word, or not, blood speaks.

Then, a vision of red flashed by as Kalisto recalled the powerful Echo armour of Wolfgang Visarett, the last of the major influences of the elf. The man, inadvertently, taught Kalisto many values that the elf would never forget. The elf left for his journey for a reason, it was a combination of his desire to be more like Dispeyr, Duelist and Wolfgang - to bring forth a sense of assuredness, and the prowess they showed in everything they did. As Kalisto's now deceased Gods constantly tormented the elf by raising him after each death, the elf began to get sick of life. But, as he watched Wolfgang, the elf began to wonder if he had been missing something, and from these influences he left on a journey to tear apart his soul, and look deep within himself to find an answer to his questions.

His thoughts then flashed, bringing back memories of his hidden past, and the elf delved into the depths of his soul as he stared into the dark abyss in his mind. These memories filled him with their all-pervading images, swathing his whole concentration with the pain and warmth of his past. All his memories were the same, some painful, some painless, but most felt robotic and trivial. Memories were a thing of his past, outdated, and as the elf brought them back up, he began to dig up a part of his forgotten self. At least, this was what the elf thought when his mind ventured in the five and score more millennia of his nigh eternal life. In his mind he recalled the faces of his past, the cat boy Bluesoul, a large influence, Ghideon, a friend from his past, Dark Angel Phoenix, Sooley... these faces raced by until he saw the faces of his family. The family of the race of elves he exterminated by his own hand as he killed the Gods which held him back from what he had long desired.

The memories of his past washed over him once more, bathing his whole body with the sensation, with the warmth, and the pain of a thousand thousand memories. Kalisto delved into the the depthlessness of his mind. Images and feelings took shape, but they were only a thing of the past. In his mind he watched his judgement before his gods, the images that scarred his eyes. He watched the gods mutilate his body and pour molten armor onto his skin, but he did not cry out - if he did he would not have been spared. As they gave him a second chance, he came back and turned on them several years later with the help of his memories, and exterminated his gods and what they stood for. Because of the memories of his friends, Kalisto freed himself from the vengeful grasp of his gods, and from his past and his people. Too much pain happened in the past.

His thoughts kicked back to the present as the luminous moonlight peeked through the overcast clouds and bathed the elf's lithe form in an eerie moonlight. His pale skin caught the light as it danced on the silver reflection of his hair and eyes. The elf stood motionless as he spotted his dancing friend. He could not care less who he fought, as cocky as he was, the elf was sure of his skill. He was Crimson Void, and he would let nobody sully his name and reputation for any mistake or luck his foe or the elf would make. His left hand moved up to his sternum and loosened the strings, and the moonlight reflected off the leather strands that had been wrapped and tied around each of the mercenary’s forearms and hands. His eyes crept into small slits as he clenched his teeth and fists, taking a deep breath and exhaling ever so slowly to prepare for the events.

"Let's get this over with then, shall we - oh dancing one?" the elf called to David. "Let the first round begin finally, in the arena of the dead. People will die today, and the next day, and the day after, upon these grounds. Blood will be spilled. That is to be expected. Only great warriors escape death more than once, and the losers may not leave alive, but that is their choice. That is my warning, to my opponent." Kalisto spoke nonchalantly, but true.

Dan read the feelings and thoughts of his combatant. "The name's Daniel, man! And you'll find I am tougher than you think!"

Daniel landed after a spectacular backflip into a horse-mount karate stance and began to plan his strategy. His recent experiences in the Veteran wars had served him well, and he recalled some of the moves from that recent conflict. He had battled Duke Vakarro, and it had been a fairly even match. Dan recalled his opening move from the battle and a thin smile broke upon his face. It had worked once, and certainly would do so again.

Dan brought his hands down to a low block position and slowly raised them up. This coincided with a focus of his mind on the rock that lay below the surface of the dark arena. He drew heavy, solid columns of it through the dusty soil of the ground. They formed a solid cage around the elven warrior, hopefully locking him down for a good blow. Dan quickly melted his weights and formed 45 caliber bullets from them, then propelled these at his adversary.

As his opponent continued whatever charade he was up to, Kalisto was off on his own tangent, formulating tactics and strategies in his mind - detached and uncaring as to what his opponent was doing. They were irrelevant, as was their actions, words, and any gratuity, if any, they had made. Kalisto ignored anything and everything as he focused on his own situation. The elf slowly lifted his eyes to the overcast skies, his silvery masses of his eyes stared deep into the obscure atmosphere as he watched the shadowy clouds that embroidered the weary moon. This night the dead crept out and lingered on the underworlds plane of existence, drowning the wind out with their misery and despair. It was a rather beautiful sight as the sickly moon crept through the clouds and struck the pale face of the elven warrior. As soon as a sorrowful spectre passed by, the night would return again to its peaceful yet melancholic serenity, empty and seemingly endless.

The moon was, in itself, so deep a melancholy and so full of inner and beautiful power. Its rays were as frail as a shadow, and they were lifeless like the walls of a regal sepulchre; yet, they were so beautiful and sat fixed upon a perpetual throne on an otherwise ebony backdrop. Taking deliberate and conscientious steps the warrior had shifted his feet on through the colourless and drab sand, the soft shifting of the tiny grains was the only barely audible sound under his heavy boots. The sky above was covered by a thick layer of black and grey clouds, and it was as if the sun was much too afraid to come to a place of death and decay such as this. A soft mist coiled amongst the ground as the elf stepped around the decayed tree to face his opponent, this warrior that he cared nothing about. Faceless, voiceless, soulless - the kill meant nothing in the context of a bigger whole. He chanted slowly in an emotionless but beautiful voice, as his hands shone with a dim light.

In that time, David had begun his attack. Aware of his surroundings, Kalisto's hearing had a good advantage over most combatants - he heard the shuffling of rock beneath the raw sand he stood upon, felt the small vibrations being caused by the shifting rock formations. The elf expected something like this, obviously, and his first reaction was to backflip out of the way; yet, he came a bit too slow. In the middle of his jump, the rock rushed up from the sand sending both the grainy substance and the rock up in a prison like circle around where Kalisto had been standing moments before. The cage rushed up, and Kalisto used this prison to aid his jump as the lithe warrior propelled his body up and over the back of the columns with his glowing hands, leaving a trail of bliding white energy behind him as he declined. As he rapidly declined, he clapped his hands together and his magical, but very droll chant ended in the time he had jumped and by the time he had begun to land.

By a sudden release of spiritual energy, the travelling plethora of force passed among the path through the air into Kalisto's hands. This action resulted in a thunderous crash and a violent, blinding flash. The twin war swords, the Kristalliis, that had been formed from the reaction of force upon the elf's hands rested vertically among the sides of the mercenary's legs. These two weapons, created identically balanced and flawless, felt comfortable and light in the elven warrior's hands - they were almost like the extension of his own person. Each sword had a nine-inch hilt with an essentially bare brass fitted mahogany handle, a lacquer finish and brilliantly polished brass completed the regal look of the twenty and a half inch war swords. The mahogany handle was quite plain, but simple and clean. The neck was brass and had centimetre long quillons to prevent an opponent from riding their weapons down the blade onto the elf's hands. For the extent of each blade, the backside of each weapon had been left unsharpened for a half-centimetre width, tapering sharply.

The lightweight crystal of the swords shone with a mystifying brilliance as they rotated slowly in Kalisto's hands. The clear crystal compund of each blade sone with magnificient radience in the dull moons rays. Each sword, completely identical to the other, seemingly and wholly indistinguishable from the other were both flawless and beautiful - crafted for the sole use of shedding blood in the capable hands of the elf. Kalisto sighed, mumbling a curse as he looked towards the warrior he was pitted to fight against, one who was as insignificant and worthless as the lightly fleeting dirt and dust that found itself upon the elf's boots. These two weapons, created identical from the elf's mind, would cleave this warrior as they did to several warriors before. Prejudice had no place in the elf's mind, as blood was blood regardless of the creature that spilled it. The life flowed within the veins.

David wasted no time as he tried to catch the elven warrior in the cage, as he formed .45 caliber bullets and sent them carrening towards the elf's would-be prison. Kalisto grinned at the outcome, as it aided him greatly. The result was that the .45 caliber shots collided and exploded with the force of the rock prison, causing a cloud of smoke, claiming the elf's body into the shadows of the grainy salt and rocks. The rocks and dust covered the elf up and down completely, as the debris began to settle, and the elf wasted no time. As he held his twin war swords, Chrylias and Excalias, he felt confident and sure. An endless calm had started to wash over his body as he found his mind relaxing - calming. His body would react to every move naturally, reflexively, done without mistake. Suddenly, his eyes had cracked down as he exhaled slowly, clearing his mind from a meditative state. This battle was about to be consummated and as he squared off in front of his opponent, the elf would try to get the first blood, and his moment had finally then reached that peak.

"I feel no remorse for ending your life," the one named as Kalisto spoke softly. The words of the composed but hardened warrior came with a stone gaze from beneath his wide black headband as he spoke to the dark shroud of dust. "Your life is no concern of mine."

The words seemingly created bitter currents of air to be circulated through the large opening in the forest where the fighters were positioned, stalemated in a tacit conflict - one up against one in what would become a blood-spattered skirmish. Although no dialogue was articulated from the dead of the underworld, the essence of carnage gesticulated in the sway of the nearby wood. The trees cried for blood as the breeze screeched for combat. Much rejoice transpired from the scorching bowels of the land of suffering, as the tension amplified in the other areas. The beginning of the end for a privileged few would initiate on this front of violated soil as two entered the area; at most, one should exit. The impasse continued on as the elf emerged from the dark shadows his foe grasciously provided, gripping the hilts of his war swords as he readied.

Purposeful, with infinite conviction, he moved surely and deftly with the deadly grace of a trained swordsman, and each foot that was placed down was done without mistake. The elf pressed on through the dirt, each bound was as lithe and firm as the last, but this time however, he was going faster and faster, as he moved into range of this opposing fighter. Then, ten feet to his opponent, the elf jumped into the air and slashed down slowly at an opposite angle with his left hand blade. The slash was fairly slow, slow enough for his opponent to see and block - at least, that was the plan. Before giving his opponent the chance to block the diagonal slash, Kalisto lashed out with his right hand with a strike up at his opponent's chest with another diagonal slash going the opposite way. If it had hit the way as it was supposed to, both blades would meet at the centre of the foes chest.

Daniel was stymied by the warrior's stubborn refusal to die, but it was of little consequence. Now the man dived at Dan with two crystal swords flashing in the air. On strike was coming in slow and low, the other high and fast. Dan's powerful brain analyzed the situation and knew he could not block both. Not with his own blade, anyway...

The dust that had been kicked up by Dan's bullets remained in the air, and Dan called it to him with all speed. As the first blade came down, Dan rose with both hand on the hilt of his sword to block it. as the other came down, Dan suddenly solidified the sand around him, superheating it to form a block of hard glass. Still, the sword kept coming through the glass, but not before Dan had thrown the first strike aside and moved to block it. Dan turned the enemy weapon over, averting disaster, but getting some high-velocity splinters in his flesh.

Dan winced but did not falter. Now he and the elf stood face-to-face. Dan adopted a cat stance, and with his mind kicked up more dust to shroud the scene. When the dust had subsided, a score of Daniels had taken the single one's place! Dan had created astral projections of himself, all of them tied in with the original's movements. It was nigh impossible to tell which was the real Daniel, and that confusion would be of great advantage to the sly combatant.

Daniel this time formed great spikes of ice from the water vapor in the air. However, each of his doppelgangers did the same! And each of the spikes would hurt just as much, for they were all real. Dan let them fly, hoping his deceit would swing the battle in his favor.

The next display of reflexes gave Kalisto a little more hope for the rest of the battle, that Daniel would provide some fun, even if it were for a few moments. As Kalisto's advance was halted by Daniel's own Coral Blade, Chrylias slammed into the cobalt making of the blade, sending a shower of sparks and sea water to cascade in a torrential rain around both fighters. The psion caught the second blow rather sluggishly, conjuring a shield of glass out of the sand. Excalias, however, shattered the glass shield with fervour, biting through the glass as if it had been air. The elf sheltered his face with his left as Daniel slapped away Excalias at the last moment, and the elf jumped back a few feet to leave some distance between the two. Daniel adopted the cat stance, as he had leaning upon his back leg, sitting pretty as his right leg touched lightly upon the ground in front of him.

Brushing off some piddly glass shards off his sleeve, the wiry elf glanced up at Daniel - after fixing his shirt and hair of course, concerned more about his appearance than what his foe had been doing at that time. As Daniel had conjured a dust storm to shroud his being, the elf had to let a chuckle escape his pale lips. It was almost as if the psionic could read Kalisto's thought into the future. Kalisto chuckled at the irony, but he dismissed the notion as act was impossible. The elf would show a true smoke screen of his own in due time. As he noticed the flickering of spirit light up in the dust, he knew, immediately, what had been going on. Daniel had been creating ethereal visions of himself - carbon copies of the psion to those with typical eyesight. Yet, the elf was far from typical. His mercury eyes had been imbued with his own spirit as he watched his body being judged by the Gods, being torn apart and mutilated - scarring his mind and sight. Due to this, trickery such as Daniel's would be a mere magician's folly to a trained eye. As the dust settled, Kalisto looked directly at the true Daniel - the other forms shrouded with an obvious displacement pointing out the non-organic, and pure spiritual make up of the mere street performers.

The first thought that entered his mind was a silent sentiment reflecting the calm, peaceful atmosphere that settled before the arrival of the two combatants, he was not even the least worried about Daniel's ongoing charade. The sky above still glowed of a myriad of colors, the last lights of warmth cascading in a stream of hues as the night shifted on into the overcast skies. As the many Daniel's broke his concentration once again, the elf's locks of platinum caught the wavering rays through the overcast skies as they faded again into nothingness. As the water solidified in the air above Daniel, Kalisto could only remember Corren and his son John - both formidable ice mages from Myria. As the water formed the gigantic ice shards Daniel would use to try to kill Kalisto, the elf gripped his swords tight, shifting his body into a relaxed position as he stood against the onslaught. At first, the elf figured only one shard would be the real one, but after a moment’s consideration, the elf surmised that he would deal with each one regardless. As the ice shards descended, Kal's left arm rose to meet them dead on - Chrylias extended out to meet each shard's point.

The elf was showered with the cold and wet shards as each of the gigantic icicles became the victim of Chrylias' accurate strikes, each shard impacting into the blade with their own force, shattering themsleves without Kalisto exerting too much force. As each icicle broke, the elf shot his arm back and forth into each projectile, and as the last icicle began to aim at the elf, the elf dropped his left and rose his right in an underhanded arc sweeping up under the giant ice shart leaning it to fall vertically behind him. The elf gave a very haughy applause as he leaned back on the giant shard, stretching his arms out as he yawned.

The elf returned to a calm state of being as he dropped his arms loosely to his sides, eyes raking the warriors standing in front of him, and the elf gave a slight, unnerving grin. His warm hands caressed the mahogany handles, feeling the perfect grip. With a deft hand, the elf flipped his swords into the air, grasping the handles as the blades began to drop to the ground. He moved the swords to his side as he crouched slightly, bringing his left arm parallel to his left leg, and turning his body to the side with his right arm at his hip facing away Daniel's forms. The air seemingly died just then as Kalisto rose up and began to channel his ethereal energy around his lithe body. As the energy began to work its way over the elven warrior’s body, Kalisto concentrated as he shut his eyes. The white and blue swirls of energy began to mask his form, mingling with the souls of the dead who had inhabited the area to create a heavy mist in the arena. His body disappeared into the mist, and Daniel disappeared from the elf's sight. Yet, that mattered little for this attack.

"No more foolish magic tricks, Daniel" the elf spoke solemnly into the mist, as his voice had began echoing in and out between the violent currents of energy flowing within the near opaque reflection. "I didn't come here to fight common riff-raff, and I want a decent fight, don't you?" The elf questioned with his tongue of silken words, as energy within the mist began to materialize and take shape of the deceased warriors who had been laid to rest in this accursed area. Kalisto grinned yet again, as his eyes laughed. "Let us begin then."

His eyes burned the dire flames of a thousand spells like the ones cast before as ethereal spiritual energy began being put off by a massive aura emanating from his forearms. The elf concentrated his essence into his swords causing the clear crystal to light up brilliantly and pulsate with the condensed energy. The ethereal energy began swirling around his outstretched arms fiercely, rapidly pushing off a misty trail of cerulean and crystal white. Bolts of misty energy jumped out from this congregation of power surrounding the elf and his swords, as his eyes began to shine as brightly as the energy contained within himself. Calling out a silent scream, the elf gaped his jaw wide as he tossed both of his blades up into the air homing after Daniel, drawing the ethereal power within him. Both blades shot out towards the opposing warrior hugging each other tightly, the white and blue energy constantly being pushed off of the weapons leaving a solid white trail between his arms and the two swords at all times. The elf cut off the conduit suddenly, and a snap echoed.

The immense amount of force contained within the swords was too much for the crystal compound of each blade to handle, and without an organic ground for the energy to be fed through; the blades could not take the energy without the conduit. A blinding flash echoed from the swords as they exploded in mid-air, sending forth the shattered shards of the brilliant crystal blade Kristalliis, the wooden hilts and brass fixings floating and spinning harmoniously with the remaining crystals. These shards of crystals gracefully floated upon that silvery azure reflection of energy, as Kalisto's ethereal spirit merged with that congregation of glittering daggers, rapidly singing as they careened towards Daniel in unison. Several shards hit the ground before the main host of daggers and each shard created an explosion of force sending tiny crystal shards to fragment in the air for a ten-foot radius around each shard - dematerializing shortly after and returning to the void where the weapons are stored until they are needed. The main host began to decline rapidly as Daniel's forms reflected around and shone within the crystallized formation.

From: Overlord Hikash | Posted: 4/9/2005 7:50:16 PM

The clearing of a throat echoed lightly throughout the terrain as a tall figure stepped towards where the two warriors had begun battle. Once again, Overlord Hikash Vinzalf had come to deliver the verdict. Granted, the one known as Daniel had forfeit... but even so, he was sure that Kalisto would like to know how he did.

Brushing his hair to the side, the armored Overlord stepped to Kalisto, and smiled lightly to him

"Congratulations, warrior. By unanimous decree, you shall proceed..."

After a moment, his gaze switched over to Daniel's position, as he then spoke again.

"You fought well, and did not fight longer than was necessary. Discretion is the better part of valor, after all. Aides will show you your way out..."

"And you, Kalisto," he began, "Shall find yourself elevated to an even greater realm to battle in. Again, congratulations. Rest up."

Pressing his crimson cape to the side as he turned away from the two, Hikash returned from whence he came, disappearing into the shadows once more.

With a flash of flames, Ares appeared to stop both competitors from moving. He smiled at both and would give his final speech of the first round.

"Great job both of you. You both fought with class and dignity. If you would both so like, a post-round celebration will be held tomorrow for all contestants, winners and losers. Now if you would excuse me, I must prepare for it."

From: Lady Murasaki | Posted: 4/9/2005 9:40:56 PM

A streak of silver and purple flies towards the combatants in the arena. It hovers in the space between the two men and upon close inspection, it looks like Tinkerbell, except wearing a liquid silver pixie dress, her violet wings fluttering rapidly.

"I bring you greetings from the Lady Murasaki, who is indisposed at the moment with her uhm...hgdragon.", she said giggling. "Lady M asked me to convey the following message."

With a melodious voice, the tiny being addressed Daniel, "Thank you young warrior for your participation in this tournament. Please continue your training and watch the veteran duelists for inspiration. With your interest, you will get better as you keep practicing."

She then flew over to Kal and hovered right in front of his face. "Lady Murasaki said to give you this," said the tiny fairy as she planted a kiss on Kal's lips. Well on a tiny part of his lips anyhow. Then she recited her memorized speech, "You performed as well as you advertise, Kal. You are a delight to read and I say congratulations and good luck in your next match."

Then with a flash, the little creature zoomed off to wherever she came from.
